Globalisation and Authoritarianism in the Philippines: Finding Answers in Fiction

Two of the strongest forces shaping Philippine society today are globalisation and creeping authoritarianism. Glenn Diaz talks about how Filipino writers are responding to these forces by, on one hand, doing what they do best–writing about what’s going on–but also in putting down the pen to participate in society in other, more radical ways.

Glenn Diaz

Glenn Diaz is the author of The Quiet Ones (Ateneo Press), which won the Philippines’ Palanca Grand Prize for the Novel in 2017. A recipient of the M Literary Residency in Bangalore, India, his work has been published in the Philippines, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, and the US. He teaches literature and creative writing at the Ateneo de Manila University. He lives in Manila.
